Raf ‘Tape’ Marini – Unravelling the man behind the tape.
-Tips from Coach Raf-
‘Tape is my essential item to always have in my gym bag because it’s so versatile. I mainly use tape for my thumbs when lifting because it prevents calluses, bleeding under there nail and allows for a stronger hook grip. This is extremely important during WODs which demand a high volume of a particular barbell movement such as Grace, Isabel and Elizabeth and it helps prevent your forearms from blowing out (not holding a hook grip)
It also plays a big part mentally when hitting big lifts because the last thing you want to work about when going heavy is a torn callus or a sore bleeding nail. Little things like that at a heavy weight can throw you off big time.
But tape isn’t only useful for your thumbs, it’s such a versatile item and it can quickly replace many other items in your gym bag if you happen to damage or lose them. Other ways I use tape include:
-As grips for gymnastics movements. The great thing about using tape as grips is that it sits flat on your hands and doesn’t bunch up which can make gripping the rings or bar harder.
-To quickly cover and protect and rips or tears and your shins or hands.
I usually carry two types of tape in my gym bag, white self adhesive tape and rigid strapping tape which can be used for all the reasons listed previously. If I could recommend one item to add to your essentials you should carry in your gym bag it would be tape. It’s cheap, versatile and effective for whatever you are using it for.’
